Orangery or conservatory – what’s the difference?

The Norfolk Conservatory Roof People

What’s the difference between an orangery and a conservatory? While the two are often spoken about interchangeably, there are some clear distinctions.

Traditionally, a conservatory is a structure made up largely of glass, with transparent walls and a fully glazed or uPVC roof. Conservatories are designed to maximise natural light and provide a strong connection to the garden. However, this high level of glazing often comes at a cost, as older conservatories can struggle with temperature control, becoming too warm in summer and uncomfortably cold in winter.

Orangeries, on the other hand, tend to feel more like a permanent extension of the home. They usually feature more solid walls, a higher proportion of brickwork and a flatter, more substantial roof structure. This construction gives orangeries a more solid, room-like appearance and often makes them feel better integrated with the main house.

Despite these differences, orangeries and conservatories have one common drawback: many are fitted with glass or uPVC roofs. While these materials allow light to flood in, they often provide limited insulation. Over time, this can lead to issues such as heat loss, glare, condensation and excessive noise during heavy rain. As a result, both conservatories and orangeries can end up being underused for large parts of the year.

This is where Blake & Howes can help. Rather than replacing an entire structure, we specialise in transforming existing orangeries and conservatories by installing stylish, insulated replacement roofs. A modern tiled roof dramatically improves thermal efficiency, regulates temperature and creates a far more comfortable environment, whatever the season.

Our insulated orangery and conservatory roofs are designed to blend seamlessly with your home, giving the space a more solid, permanent feel while still allowing for natural light through optional glazing or roof windows. The result is a room that looks better, feels better and can be enjoyed every day of the year.

If yours isn’t living up to its potential, a replacement orangery or conservatory roof from Norfolk specialists Blake & Howes could be the perfect solution, turning it into a warm, practical and inviting part of your home.
